Trying to take a proven formula and adding a nuanced and layered protagonist with real-world problems is a difficult balance to pull off. You want the layers to have weight but at the same time, you need to service the formulaic spy/assassin film that is at the foundation of this film. I do not think this film quite pulls it off but I think its better off for having tried.
The scene that I just absolutely love is the scene between Ava (Jessica Chastain) and Gena Davis at the end of the second act. Lesser films would have set up the conflict between Ava and her mother and not paid it off in a satisfying way. Luckily Director Tate Taylor and write Matthew Newton did not miss the mark on this one.
Worth a watch. The great cast elevates this movie and is actually given a few moments to show off.
